Beaches
Sumba is an unspoiled island where the natural and cultural beauty is unparalleled. Between fine sandy beaches and lush nature, disorientation is guaranteed for the traveler-adventurer who travels through this authentic earthly paradise.
Some areas are incredibly spectacular, but so remote that they can only be reached by boat. West Coast Sumba is absolutely stunning! Imagine perfect beaches and imposing cliffs adorned with jungle and palm trees.
The sea has waves for surfing in many parts, but when it is calm you can go diving and snorkelling. The presence of crocodiles has also been reported, there have been no reports of accidents with humans .Just 100 meters off Nihiwatu Beach you can find one of the most perfect waves in the world. The reef is relatively surfer-friendly.
The coral is flattened by the waves and falling doesn’t necessarily mean injury. In fact over the last few years there have been very few surfers with cliff cuts and never having any serious injuries.
Excellent destination for surfers; large waves, the wave typically swells during full and new moons; so the best conditions for diving are usually the periods between these lunar cycles.
But also for walks on the beach and exploring the coral reef at low tide. There may be periods of strong winds for four or five days, then followed by very light winds.
Generally peak winds occur during the months of June, July and August.
Large Marlin, weighing over 300 kilos and Albacore (yellowfin) tunas over 150k. migrating close to the coast during the months of August, but also in January, notable Sailfish, (sailfish) Mackerel and Wahoo, in the area throughout the year.
